It is located in the state of Tamil Nadu along the southeastern coast of India. The city and the Tamil Nadu coastline were badly affected by the Indian Ocean tsunami in 2004 which caused many deaths.

Chennai is on the thermal equator and has a hot and humid climate year round. The city gets about 51 inches of rain per year, mostly from monsoon winds.

Chennai has an industrial economy with strong presence of the automobile, technology, hardware manufacturing, and healthcare industries. It is the heart of India's auto and automotive components industry. International electronics manufacturing for global vendors such as Dell and Nokia is also important. It also has a modern stock exchange, the Madras Stock Exchange.

Ethnically, most of the population is Tamil with sizable Telugu and Malayalee communities. About 82% of the population is Hindu, about 8% are Muslims and about 8% are Christians. Tamil is the dominant language with English spoken widely as well.
